This clarifies the following:
- The adoption of Theravada Buddhism by the Khmer people of Southern Vietnam occurred in parallel with the historical development of the Southern region, including Kien Giang province. Along with the development of the Khmer people, Theravada Buddhism has evolved and changed. Throughout this process, Theravada Buddhism has consistently demonstrated its role and position. For example, during the resistance against the French and Americans, Theravada Buddhism served as a place to educate Buddhists in patriotism, a revolutionary base, and a refuge for the people. In peacetime, Theravada Buddhism preserves the spiritual and cultural values of the Khmer people, providing a strong spiritual foundation for them, consolidating and preserving their cultural identity, and enriching the religious and ethnic life of Kien Giang province.
Theravada Buddhism has always played a leading role in preserving and promoting Khmer cultural values, being a core element in Khmer cultural values. Because of this important role, Theravada Buddhism has a certain influence on the cultural and spiritual life of the Khmer people. This influence has both positive and negative aspects.
Theravada Buddhism in Giong Rieng district is not outside the general flow of Theravada Buddhism; therefore, it possesses both common characteristics and unique features, especially in the cultural and spiritual life of its followers. In this process, the impact of the market economy, social development, and cultural exchange have altered the influence of Theravada Buddhism on the cultural and spiritual life of the Khmer people in Giong Rieng, both positively and negatively. However, a proper study and assessment of these causes will lead to correct solutions for promoting positive influences and limiting or eliminating negative influences of Theravada Buddhism on the cultural and spiritual life of the Khmer people in Giong Rieng.
