Prof. Dr. Vu Van Thi – Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language – Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University, Hanoi 10. Summary of thesis results: Besides the introduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of 3 main chapters: - Chapter I: Theoretical basis related to the topic - Chapter II: Survey of methods for practicing listening comprehension skills in teaching Vietnamese to foreigners at the basic level. - Chapter III: Proposing optimal methods for teaching and practicing listening comprehension skills for foreigners at the basic level. Specifically, the thesis surveyed the types of exercises and listening comprehension practice in basic Vietnamese textbooks for foreigners and also surveyed the methods of teaching and practicing these skills in practice at some language teaching institutions. From there, the thesis has made the following suggestions: - The thesis has proposed three basic types of exercises as a basis for designing listening comprehension exercises for the basic level: + Type 1: Exercises that are mechanical in nature, helping basic learners copy and establish a new phonetic and vocabulary system in their brains as a basis for developing a second language. + Type 2: Cognitive exercises with two types: identification exercises that help learners (during the listening process) identify and distinguish the characteristics of the target language from their native language, and constructive exercises that help learners form and apply the target language. + Type 3: A combination of the above types of exercises in a reasonable way to serve different practice purposes and create interest for learners. - The thesis presents two models of assessment tests for evaluating students' listening comprehension skills during the learning process and one model of a basic-level listening comprehension test within the four-skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) testing system for awarding basic Vietnamese language proficiency certificates: + Mid-level listening comprehension assessment test + Final-level listening comprehension assessment test These two tests aim to help teachers and students promptly assess their weaknesses and strengths in listening skills, thereby adjusting and planning teaching and learning to overcome limitations and capitalize on strengths. + The basic-level listening comprehension test is used for the basic Vietnamese language proficiency certificate exam. - The thesis proposed basic-level listening comprehension training methods at various language levels, tailored to the characteristics of the Vietnamese language type: + Methods for practicing syllable listening: listening and imitating, listening and selecting, listening and writing/filling in… emphasizing the skill of distinguishing and memorizing Vietnamese phonetics. + Methods for practicing word listening comprehension: listening and explaining the meaning of words, listening and creating word combinations, listening and filling in words… helping to improve vocabulary and word recognition within sound sequences. + Methods for practicing listening comprehension of sentences: listening and answering questions, listening and completing sentences, listening and rephrasing, listening and choosing the correct answer, listening and connecting, listening and arranging sentences… help learners practice skills in memorization, note-taking, information tracking, association, and response… + Methods for practicing listening comprehension of passages and conversations: listening and answering questions, listening and determining true/false information, listening to summaries/narratives of content, listening and filling in information… help practice skills in synthesizing information, analyzing, memorizing, selecting, and associating… 11. Practical applications: - Application in designing basic Vietnamese language textbooks for foreigners; - Application in teaching and practicing listening comprehension skills for foreigners at the basic level; - Application in testing and evaluating language proficiency. 12. Future research directions: - Survey and research on listening comprehension skills at higher educational levels (intermediate and advanced); - Survey and research the remaining skills (speaking, reading, and writing) in teaching Vietnamese to foreigners. 13. Published works related to the thesis: - Nguyen Kim Yen, 2009, The “Top-down, bottom-up” method and its application in training Vietnamese listening comprehension skills for foreigners at the basic level, Proceedings of the scientific conference – Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language - Language Teaching Methods, Hanoi National University Publishing House. - Nguyen Kim Yen, 2010, Practicing Vietnamese listening comprehension skills at the basic level, Proceedings of the scientific conference – Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language – Approaches, Hanoi National University Publishing House.

1. Full name : NGUYEN KIM YEN 2. Sex: Female 3. Date of birth: November 13, 1980 4. Place of birth: Nam Dinh 5. Admission decision number: 2551/QD/XHNV-KH&SĐH Dated November 2, 2007 6. Changes in academic process: none 7. Official thesis title: An investigation into the teaching listening skill comprehension to elementary level Vietnamese learnerns 8. Major: Linguistics 9. Code: 60 22 01 10. Supervisors: Professor - Doctor Vu Van Thi 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: The thesis is divided into 3 main parts: - Part one: The theory related to the thesis - Part two: An investigation into the teaching listening comprehension skill to the elementary level Vietnamese learners - Part three: Promote detailed methods of teaching comprehension skill to the elementary level Vietnamese learners In listening, we make an investigation on the drills and exercies of practicing listening comprehension skill designed in the diverse elementary Vietnamese books for foreigners and the teaching methods in the reality at some Vietnamese language training centers and schools. Firstly, we suggest designing two types of exercises for practicing the listening comprehension skill: - Type 1: Mechanical exercises to help the learners to copy and set up a new system of language in their brain; - Type 2: Cognative exercises include 2 other types: the recognation exercises and the production exercises to help the learners to discover the rules of the new language and check whether he knows the rules and how right his rules are then stablize the language in their mind; - Type 3: the combination of the 2 types above Secondly, we give out three forms of tests for evaluating and testing the listening comprehension skill - Form 1: the listening test for pre-elementary level; - Form 2: the listening test for upper – elementary level; - Form 3: the listening test for the elementary level Vietnamese language testing system. Thirdly, we promote different methods of teaching listening skill at the elementary level for different purposes - Methods of listening sounds to help the learners to recognize different Vietnamese vowels, consonants, tones and the combinations of them; - Methods of listening vocabulary to help the learners recognize and understand the meaning of words as well as improve their vocabulary; - Methods of listening sentences to help the learners to understand the meaning of sentences and ipmrove the taking notes skill, the memorizing skill and other related skills - Methods of listening paragraphs and dialogues to help the learners to understand the meaning of the whole text and improve their predicting skill, sumarizing skill and other related skills. 12. Practical applicability: - application to text books' drills and exercises designing work - application to teaching Vietnamese language for foreigners in the reality 13. Further research directions,: - develop the thesis at higher levels (intermediate and advance levels) in other skills (speaking, reading and writing) 14. Thesis-related publications: - The “top-down” and “bottom-up” for practicing listening comprehension Vietnamese language at elementary level. – Summary record of the Linguistics Conference – Skills of teaching Vietnamese language for foreigners. – 2009. - Practicing listening comprehension for the elementary level learners - Summary record of the Linguistics Conference – Methods of approaching the language - 2010.
