Summary of the results of the thesis: In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of 3 main chapters: - Chapter I: Theoretical basis related to the topic - Chapter II: Survey of methods of practicing listening-comprehension skills in teaching Vietnamese for foreigners at the basic level. - Chapter III: Proposing optimal methods in teaching and practicing listening-comprehension skills for foreigners at the basic level. Specifically, the thesis has conducted a survey of the types of exercises and listening-comprehension exercises in basic Vietnamese textbooks for foreigners and at the same time surveyed the methods of teaching and practicing this skill in practice at some language teaching institutions. From there, the thesis has made the following suggestions: - The thesis has proposed three basic types of exercises as a basis for designing listening comprehension exercises for elementary level: + Type 1: Mechanical exercises that help elementary learners copy and establish a new system of phonetics and vocabulary in the brain as a basis for developing a second language. + Type 2: Cognitive exercises with two types of exercises: recognition exercises that help learners (during the listening process) identify and distinguish the characteristics of the target language from their mother tongue and creative exercises that help learners shape and apply the target language. + Type 3: A combination of the above types of exercises in a reasonable way to serve different practice purposes and create interest for learners. - The thesis has proposed two models of tests to assess students' listening comprehension skills during the learning process and a model of a basic level listening comprehension test in the system of four listening, speaking, reading and writing skills tests to grant basic Vietnamese proficiency certificates: + Mid-level listening comprehension test + Final level listening comprehension test These two tests aim to help teachers and students promptly assess their weaknesses and strengths in listening skills so that they can adjust and have a teaching and learning plan to overcome weaknesses and promote strengths. + The basic level listening comprehension test is used for the basic Vietnamese proficiency certificate test. - The thesis has proposed basic listening comprehension training methods at language levels suitable to the characteristics of Vietnamese language types: + Syllable listening practice methods: listen and imitate, listen and select, listen and write/fill in... emphasizing the skills of distinguishing and memorizing Vietnamese phonetics. + Word listening comprehension training methods: listen and interpret words, listen and create word combinations, listen and fill in words... helping to improve vocabulary and identify words in sound sequences. + Methods of practicing listening and understanding sentences: listening and answering questions, listening and completing sentences, listening and rephrasing, listening and choosing the correct answer, listening and connecting, listening and arranging sentences... help students practice memorization skills, taking notes, tracking information, associating, responding... + Methods of practicing listening and understanding paragraphs and conversations: listening and answering questions, listening and determining true/false information, listening to summarize/retell the content, listening and filling in information... help practice information synthesis skills, analysis, memorization, selection, association... 11. Ability to apply in practice: - Apply to designing basic Vietnamese language textbooks for foreigners; - Apply to teaching and practicing listening and understanding skills for foreigners at basic level; - Apply to testing and assessing language proficiency. 12.
