Based on official documents and the results of scientific studies related to the research topic, this thesis is a comprehensive assessment of US security policy towards Southeast Asia during the period 2009-2012. From this, the author gains an understanding of the US intentions in adjusting its security policy towards the region, how this adjustment created geopolitical changes, and the impact of this policy on the security landscape of Southeast Asia in general and Vietnam in particular. Besides studying US policies, the thesis also focuses on exploring China's perspective in evaluating the Obama administration's "pivot" strategy, thereby making comparisons and assessing the impact of Sino-US relations on the power balance strategies of Southeast Asian nations in the context of a rapidly changing regional security landscape.

With the focus on US - Southeast Asian relations, this thesis is likely a review of US security policy towards Southeast Asia under President Obama's administration in the period from 2009 to 2012. Based on formal documents and other related research which relevant to US policy, I want to find out what the hidden targets of US Policy are, how geo-political changes influence this region, including Vietnam. This research also pays attention to China's attitude toward US policy as well as its implications for the Southeast Asian rebalance between such a raising China and a resident power - the US.
