Based on official documents and the results of scientific works related to the research topic, this thesis is a comprehensive assessment of the US security policy towards the Southeast Asian region in the period of 2009-2012. From there, the author of the thesis has gained an understanding of the US's intentions in adjusting its security policy towards the region, how this adjustment creates geopolitical changes as well as the impact of the policy on the security context of the Southeast Asian region in general and Vietnam in particular. In addition to studying US policies, the thesis also focuses on exploiting China's viewpoints in assessing the Obama administration's "pivot" strategy, thereby making comparisons and assessing the impact of China-US relations on the balance of power strategy of Southeast Asian countries in the context of many changes in regional security.

With the focus on US - Southeast Asian relations, this thesis is likely a review of US security policy towards Southeast Asia under President Obama's administration in the period from 2009 to 2012. Based on formal documents and other related research which relevant to US policy, I want to find out what the hidden targets of US Policy are, how geo-political changes influence this region, including Vietnam. This research also pays attention to China's attitude toward US policy as well as its implications for the Southeast Asian rebalance between such a raising China and a resident power - the US.
