10. Summary of the thesis results
The main findings of the thesis include:
- An overview of some viewpoints and concepts in the study of realism in international relations: issues of power, security, conflict, national interests, anarchism, etc.
- Assessing the reasons for North Korea's development of a nuclear program from a realist perspective at various research levels:
+ At the individual level: affirming the decisive policy-making role of the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
+ National level: Based on national interests in national security, economy, culture, and the political power of interest groups and leaders, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea steadfastly develops its nuclear program despite international condemnation.
+ Intergovernmental level: The countries participating in the Six-Party Talks – a mechanism established to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, including the United States, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea – all prioritized their own national interests over the common good, using economic tools, influence, and military power to pressure North Korea into maintaining and developing its nuclear program.
+ Global level: According to realist theory, the world is an anarchic environment full of instability, conflicts are always occurring, and peace is merely a temporary truce to prepare for the next conflict. Therefore, nations must always strengthen their military power to ensure security and interests. The reality of the world today, with so many conflicts occurring, further demonstrates that this unstable environment makes it unlikely that North Korea will abandon its nuclear weapons.
- Due to clear national interests, the countries in the six-party talks (including North Korea) will likely maintain the current nuclear status quo. Larger-scale nuclear program development is unlikely, and North Korea's complete abandonment of its nuclear program is also improbable.
11. Practical applications:
- This thesis will be a useful reference for students in International Studies, International Relations, International Politics, and other fields, as well as for anyone interested in theoretical research on international relations.
- This topic also contributes to the study of North Korea's nuclear program, assessing the attitudes of major powers on this issue as well as relations between major powers in general.
12. Future research directions:
- North Korea in US-China relations.
- The future political landscape of East Asia.

10. Summary of the findings of the thesis:
The main results of the thesis are:
- The outline some perspectives, concepts in the study of realism in international relations: power, security, conflict, national interests, anarchy, ...
- Evaluate the causes why DPRK developed nuclear programs under the perspective of realism under study levels:
+ The Individual Level: confirms the role policy decisions of the supreme leader DPRK
+ The Nation-State Level: on the basis of national interests of national security, economic, culture, and political power of interest groups and leaders, North Korea insists the nuclear development program wear for being the world condemned
+ The Transnation Level: the countries engaged Six-party Talks - the mechanism established to resolve the Korean nuclear issue including the United States, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, DPRK are in the interests of their country, rather than the common good. They use economic tools, power influence, military power acting on the DPRK to maintain and develop its nuclear program.
+ The System Level: according to realism theory, anarchy is full of uncertainty, conflict always present, just peace truce period to prepare for the next conflict. So, actors always have to strengthen the military power to ensure the security and interests. In fact that the world nowadays has had a lot of conflicts happened which caused the DPRK to abandon its nuclear weapons is unlikely.
- Due to the distinct national interests, the countries in Six-party talks (including North Korea) will temporarily maintain the status quo as the current nucleus. The development of the nuclear program at a larger scale is unlikely to happen and accepting the DPRK to abandon its nuclear program is completely impossible.
