The thesis after conducting research, survey, analysis of structural and semantic characteristics,

reasons and uses and social issues related to nicknames

The thesis obtained the following results:

A. In terms of origin, nicknames are pure Vietnamese words that account for a large number. Next are the

words of Indo-European origin and finally words of Chinese origin. Loanwords of the original

Indo-European in Vietnamese is used by Vietnamese people in a very rich, diverse and unique way.

B. In terms of form, nicknames are made up of words (single words) and compound words. Compound words

Compound words are divided into reduplicated words and compound words. Compound words are divided into smaller parts.

After investigating and analyzing the structure – meaning, as well as the usages and social issues related to the naming nicknames, our thesis has acquired the following results:

  1. In terms of the origin, nicknames, which are native Vietnamese words, are major. The next type is words which are originated from Indian – European languages ​​and the left is Sino-Vietnamese words. The borrowed words form Indian – European languages ​​are used in diversity and special ways.
  2. In terms of formality, nicknames are composed of words (single words) and composite words. Composite words are divided into compound words and reduplicative words. Compound words are divided into coordinate compound and subordinate compound. In subordinate compound, there are the cooperation of nouns - nouns, compound nouns - adjectives, compound nouns - verbs,...
  3. In terms of meaning, nicknames are divided into 4 groups: Group 1 is things in general; Group 2 is the phenomenon of natural and social process; Group 3 is the things that belong to human being; and Group 4 is the special group. In which, the number of nicknames in group 1 are major because it is simple, adorable, friendly as well as expressing the desires of name given.
  4. In terms of lexicon and grammar, nicknames are divided into 5 groups: (1) nicknames are nouns; (2) nicknames are verbs; (3) nicknames are adjectives; (4) nicknames are adverbs; and (5) nicknames are numbers.
  5. In the diversity of meanings, nicknames are divided into: (1) nicknames are related to family; (2) nicknames are related to the children themselves; and (3) nicknames are expressing the opinion of “easy to grow up”. In which, the most popular nicknames are ones that express the family members' desires and children's appearances or characteristics.
  6. It is not easy to distinguish the gender of children's nicknames in Vietnam because they are named randomly according to one's preferences or desires conveyed in these nicknames.
  7. Foreign languages ​​are more and more widely used as names for children. Besides English, there are French, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Laotian,…
  8. Although nicknames are not used as widely and officially as full-name, they are used popularly in the early stage of one's life (they are probably named before/ in/ after giving birth), unpopular in the next stage and possibly gone away in the next years.

These results are preliminary efforts in researching nicknames in Vietnam. Based on this, we have more chances to understand more about Vietnamese traditional culture in naming. This is also a reliable document for the next scholars researching about Vietnamese names as well as society and culture.

The most practical and important application of the thesis is that finding a propitious and meaningful for each person.
