The thesis has presented an overview of the factors affecting the Vietnam - Japan economic relations and the current state of Vietnam's economic relations with Japan before 1996; clarified the guidelines and policies of the Communist Party of Vietnam on developing Vietnam's foreign economic relations with Japan from 1996 to 2010 through two periods 1996-2000 and 2001-2010 in the main areas: trade relations, investment cooperation and development aid from Japan to Vietnam; At the same time, from the practical experience of Vietnam - Japan economic relations, the thesis has made some comments on the advantages, limitations and drawn some experiences, contributing to improving the effectiveness of economic relations between the two countries in the new situation.

The thesis can be used as a reference for studying and researching the Communist Party of Vietnam's guidelines on economic integration and the economic relationship between Vietnam and Japan.
