The thesis has studied the basic characteristics of the novel genre in the work "The Pigeon Keepers". First of all, the thesis has focused on the most basic characteristic of historical novels, which is the epic nature through examining historical facts, fiction, and epics about women and men. Besides, the thesis has examined the tragic nature through ethnic, family, and personal conflicts. The thesis also examines the poetry contained in the natural scenery, symbolic images, and human love. The research results have shown the beauty of the novel and the innate literary talent of the author Alice Hoffman.

The thesis has researched and figured out basic characteristics of the novel in the composition named “The Dovekeepers”. Firstly, the thesis has focused on the most basic characteristics of historical novels; that is the epic discovered through the survey of the historical facts, fictions and the hero song about women and men. In addition, the thesis also considers the poetry nature contained in natural surroundings, icon images and human love. Research results have shown the beauty of the novel and Alice Hoffman's natural literary talent.
