7. Thesis title: Character and Identity Crisis in John Steinbeck's "East of Eden"
8. Major: Foreign Literature Code: 8229030.03
9. Scientific supervisor: Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy
10. Summary of the thesis results:
- John Steinbeck's novel, *East of Eden*, is an epic tale about America and its people, about father-son, mother-son, brotherly, and marital relationships, about love and desire, about life and death… Steinbeck wrote *East of Eden* at a time when America was beginning to re-evaluate racial issues with the civil rights movement gaining momentum; the journey of the characters in the work shows that the formation and transformation of human identity is not simple, but complex with many nuances.
- Each generation of the Trask family reenacts the same ancient myth of Cain and Abel, each, in their own way, facing and grappling with the problem of Evil. For Steinbeck, Evil always exists; it is an unavoidable aspect of humanity. However, through the characters' journeys through crisis and the creation of new identities, beliefs, and convictions, he conveys the message that each individual has the freedom to conquer and subdue Evil through their own choices. This is the "Timshel" commitment that the character Lee interprets and gives new meaning to.
