The material for this thesis is a statistical analysis of substitution and temporary substitution in the works of Nam Cao (through 41 short stories) and Nguyen Huy Thiep (through 12 short stories) from two selected anthologies. Chapter 1 of the thesis is theoretical in nature, introducing substitution and temporary substitution, as well as previous studies in the world and Vietnam on this linking method, and presenting our viewpoint. Chapter 2 describes the scope, linking direction, grammatical structure of the system of substitutions and the relationship between temporary substitution and several other linking methods. Chapter 3 of the thesis points out the values of temporary substitution and its effectiveness in contributing to the unique style of each author, demonstrating the different linguistic possibilities of the two unique short story writing styles in the flow of modern Vietnamese literature.
