10. Summary of thesis results:
In addition to focusing on analyzing three films by director Lav Diaz including: The Woman Who Left, The Halt and Genus Pan, students also expanded the comparison and contrast with his other cinematic works throughout his creative process to draw some conclusions about his writing style. The findings through the outstanding characteristics as well as the common denominator for this author's style include:
On national identity through post-colonial political discourse: Director Lav Diaz has opened up a post-apocalyptic cinematic world with distinctive and consistent styles such as the use of wide and static angles with long single-shot durations. At the same time, he has used black and white with a setting that spans from history to the future. From there, he questions national identity and ontology, questions history and grand narratives about the Philippines.
The director, who inherited from the literary novel, especially Russian literature, has succeeded in re-presenting typical character archetypes. Unlike most slow cinema films with little dialogue and an expansion of space and time, Lav Diaz has enriched the style of slow cinema with a dense character line, plot and plot, with many dialogues, set between the natural and urban space like a maze with no way out.
Finally, director Lav Diaz not only affirms a consistent authorial style with straightforward political discourses, but he also has experiments in the practice of renewing film genres (specifically historical and science fiction films). With a style of expression that goes against Hollywood standards and beyond the author's expectations, his historical and science fiction films are expressed in a style that avoids sophistication and the use of black and white images that blur the concept of time. Space, thanks to that, becomes the main character and element for human existence, evolution and even reverse evolution.
In summary, the topic has relatively solved the problems raised in the introduction, approaching and comparing the works of director Lav Diaz. The three films The Woman Who Left, The Halt and Genus Pan are not the only cases, however, due to limited space, the student is forced to focus on this case, and select the most important issues. However, the student is still aware that in order to have a comprehensive view of director Lav Diaz's style from a poetics perspective, it is necessary to expand the scope and object of research. This is the work that the student will continue to research, survey and implement in the future.
11. Practical applicability: Director Lav Diaz's way of examining and reading films has been expanded to include many different approaches, thereby expanding the way of reading films related to many different theories. In addition, the author's style viewed from poetics also suggests a creative approach for filmmakers.
