7. Thesis Title: Lav Diaz's Directing Style from a Poetics Perspective (A Study of Three Films: “The Woman Who Left”, “The Halt”, and “Genus Pan”)
8. Major: Theory and history of film and television; Code: 8210232.01

10. Summary of the thesis results:
In addition to focusing on analyzing three films by director Lav Diaz, including The Woman Who Left, The Halt, and Genus Pan, the students also expanded their analysis to include comparisons with his other cinematic works throughout his career to draw some conclusions about his style. The findings, through prominent characteristics and common denominators of this authorial style, include:
Regarding national identity through postcolonial political discourse: director Lav Diaz opened up a post-apocalyptic cinematic world with distinctive and consistent styles, such as the use of wide, static camera angles with long takes. Simultaneously, he employed black and white imagery with settings spanning from history to the future. From this, he questioned national identity and selfhood, history, and the grand narratives of the Philippines.
The director, inheriting a literary tradition of fiction, particularly Russian literature, has successfully recreated archetypal characters. Unlike most slow-motion films with minimal dialogue and expansive time and space, Lav Diaz enriched the slow-motion style with a rich cast of characters, storylines, and plotlines, featuring numerous dialogues set amidst a labyrinthine landscape of nature and urban environments.
Ultimately, director Lav Diaz not only affirms a consistent authorial style with frank political discourse, but he also experiments in reinventing film genres (specifically historical and science fiction). With a style that defies Hollywood norms and goes beyond the author's expectations, his historical and science fiction films avoid ostentation and utilize black-and-white imagery to blur the concept of time. Space, therefore, becomes the central character and element for human existence, evolution, and even reverse evolution.
In summary, the topic has relatively addressed the issues raised in the introduction, approaching and comparing the works of director Lav Diaz. The three films The Woman Who Left, The Halt, and Genus Pan are not the only cases; however, due to space limitations, the student was forced to focus on this case and select the most important issues. Nevertheless, the student is aware that to gain a comprehensive understanding of Lav Diaz's style from a poetics perspective, the scope and subject of research must be broadened. This is work that the student will continue to research, survey, and develop in the future.
11. Practical applications: Director Lav Diaz's approach to film analysis and interpretation expands upon various perspectives, broadening the understanding of film interpretation in relation to different theories. Furthermore, the author's style, viewed from a poetics standpoint, offers filmmakers a new creative approach.
