Through an analysis of three films from "The Scent of Green Papaya" – 1993(L'Odeur de la papaye verte);"Cyclo" – 1995(Cyclo)"Vertical Summer" - 2000(The Vertical Ray of the Sun)We found that director Tran Anh Hung has skillfully employed cinematic techniques and artistry. Motifs and imagery are adapted and processed in each film to tell different stories, yet still create a distinct and impressive style unique to the director. The art of staging, combined with cinematography, is very harmonious and tightly integrated to achieve the director's intentions. This creates a style and creativity characteristic of independent, auteur films. We noticed a distinct style in terms of form: storytelling, composition, character design, art installation, lighting, color… in each film that doesn't follow traditional formulas or sequential storytelling. This contemporary style, art installation, body language… and this unique style have significantly contributed to the success of each work.
