7. Project Title: Psychological Support for an Adolescent with Negative Coping Behavior
8. Major: Clinical Psychology (University of Applied Sciences); Code 8310402.
9. Scientific supervisors: Dr. Nguyen Thi Anh Thu; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Nam.
10. Summary of project results:
Firstly, the project established a theoretical foundation by clarifying concepts related to negative coping behaviors, intermittent explosive behavioral disorders, and family and social factors influencing emotional and behavioral difficulties in adolescents. The project also systematized domestic and international research on the current situation, characteristics, and intervention approaches for this group of children, while presenting the core content of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) commonly used in intervention.
Secondly, the trainees conducted an assessment and intervention using CBT (Continuing Behavior Assessment) on an 11-year-old child with negative coping behaviors, meeting the criteria for intermittent explosive behavior disorder, through a case study process combining clinical interviews, observation, standardized stress tests (SDQs), and interviews with parents and homeroom teachers before and after intervention. Secondly, the trainees implemented CBT intervention for an 11-year-old child with negative coping behaviors. After 16 sessions, outbursts of anger significantly decreased, the frequency of conflicts with friends and younger brother decreased, and the ability to recognize emotions and use techniques to control behavior improved significantly. Qualitative assessments and reports from teachers and parents also showed that the child's relationship with family and friends improved. These results provide preliminary empirical evidence on the effectiveness of CBT in providing psychological support to adolescents with negative coping behaviors in the Vietnamese school environment, while also suggesting the need to expand interventions at the family and system levels to address the intergenerational factors sustaining the problem in greater depth.
11. Practical Applicability: The project provided a perspective on the effectiveness of CBT in intervening in a case of a teenager with negative coping behaviors, thereby laying the groundwork for expanding the application of CBT to interventions for negative coping behaviors in adolescents in Vietnam. In the recommendations section, the project presented the advantages and disadvantages of applying CBT in the Vietnamese cultural context, suggesting directions for further research.
12. Future research directions: The student plans to continue applying CBT to interventions for adolescent clients with negative coping behaviors to further evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of CBT when applied to the Vietnamese cultural context. From there, the student will propose solutions to overcome the disadvantages based on the foundational theory of CBT.

11. Summary of the findings of the project:
First, the student developed the theoretical framework by clarifying concepts related to negative coping behaviors, intermittent explosive disorder, and family and social factors affecting emotional and behavioral difficulties in adolescents. The project also systematized domestic and international studies on the current situation, characteristics, and intervention approaches for this group, while presenting the core contents of cognitive behavioral therapy CBT commonly used in intervention.
Second, the student conducted assessment and intervention using CBT for an 11-year-old child with negative coping behaviors who met the criteria for intermittent explosive disorder. The case study process combines clinical interviewing, observation, standardized SDQ scales, and interviews with the parent and homeroom teacher before and after the intervention. After 16 sessions, angry outbursts decreased significantly, the frequency of conflicts with peers and the younger brother was reduced, and the child's ability to identify emotions and use techniques to control behavior improved significantly. Qualitative assessment and reports from the teacher and parent also showed improved relationships with family members and peers. These findings provide preliminary empirical evidence for the effectiveness of CBT in providing psychological support for adolescents with negative coping behaviors in the Vietnamese school context, while also suggesting the need to expand intervention at the family and systems levels to address more deeply the intergenerational factors maintaining the problem.
12. Practical applicability:
The thesis has insight into the effectiveness of CBT in intervening in a case of an adolescent with negative coping behaviors, thereby laying the groundwork for broader application of this approach to interventions for adolescents with negative coping behaviors in Vietnam. In the recommendations section, the student also presented the advantages and disadvantages of applying CBT in the Vietnamese cultural context, offering suggestions for further research.
13. Further research directions:
I plan to continue applying CBT in interventions for adolescent clients with negative coping behaviors in order to further evaluate its strengths and limitations in the Vietnamese cultural context. Based on these findings, the student will propose solutions to address the limitations while remaining grounded in the theoretical foundations of CBT.
