10. Summary of thesis results:

The topic “Group social work with mine victims (Case study in Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province)” was conducted with the aim of describing the current situation of mines, mine accidents and mine victims after the war. From there, propose group social work activities to actively contribute to preventing and minimizing the consequences of mine accidents for victims.

Research has shown that the number of mines and bombs left over from the war in Trieu Phong district is very large with many different types. Mine accidents stemming from many subjective and objective causes have caused consequences for the environment, health, lives of people and the local socio-economy. In recent years, many activities to overcome the consequences of mines and bombs have been deployed locally and have initially brought positive results, contributing to preventing and minimizing the harmful effects of mines and bombs, supporting victims after accidents.

The number of landmine victims in Trieu Phong district tends to decrease every year, most of them are men, of working age with low education level and below average annual family income. Victims’ awareness of landmines and related issues is still limited and there is a clear difference in awareness level between age, occupation, economic situation, residential area, etc.

The proposed group social work activities have created a positive living environment; contributed to relieving psychological difficulties, imparting necessary knowledge, experience and skills so that victims can raise awareness and prevent accidents for themselves and the community.

11. Practical application:

Social work in general and the field of social work with mine victims in particular in our country are still in the process of construction and completion. The research results mainly refer to group social work activities with mine victims to help victims stabilize their psychology and raise awareness to contribute to reducing the risk of accidents in the community. Therefore, the research also contributes to the construction and development of a group social work model with the specific target of mine victims.

12. Further research directions:

Based on the results obtained from this topic, I plan to conduct further research on Building a model of group social work with mine victims.

11. Summary of the findings of the thesis:

The thesis “Social Group Work with Landmine Victims: A case study in Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province” aims to describe the practice of landmines, landmine accidents, and landmine victims after the war. Based on that, some social work interventions were proposed for the ultimate purposes of preventing and minimizing the negative effects of landmines on population.

The research findings show that in Trieu Phong district, after the war landmines were still remaining in high number and diversity in types. Landmine accident rooted by both subjective and objective causes have evidently impacted on environment, people's health and lives, and socio-economic development of the district. During past years, a number of interventions for dealing with the effects of landmines have been implemented in the research site. Such activities have initially yield out positive outcomes contributing to preventing and minimizing the negative effects of landmines, supporting landmine victims.

The findings also revealed that the number of landmine victims in Trieu Phong district has been decreased year by year. Most of landmine victims are men who are in working age and have low level of educational attainment, whose annual family income is below average standards. In addition, it is also indicated that the understanding about landmines and other related issues of such victims is limited and differentiated depending on age, occupation, economic position, location and so on.

Some Social Group Work interventions have been proposed in order to build up a positive sharing environment; contributes to clearing off psychological troubles; providing needed knowledge, experience and skills so that the landmine victims can enhance their awareness and prevent from landmine accidents for themselves and for the whole community.

12. Practical applicability:

Social Work in general and Social Work with Landmine Victims in particular in Vietnam have been under the process of designing and finalization. This study focuses mostly on Social Group Work interventions with Landmine victims for the purpose of supporting these victims to improve their psychology and enhance their awareness for minimizing the risks of landmine accidents in community. Therefore, this study will contribute to designing and developing some relevant models of Social Group Work for landmine victims.

13. Further research directions:

Based on the findings of this thesis, I will do further research for designing Social Group Work models for Landmine Victims.
