10. Summary of thesis results:

Based on the study of caregivers' awareness of schizophrenia. The results showed that caregivers' awareness of schizophrenia was at an average level.

Regarding the perception of the nature of schizophrenia. Although the view that schizophrenia is a disease that tends to progress chronically and requires lifelong treatment has the highest average score (Average score = 0.80/1), inaccurate views about the nature of the disease still have quite high scores, such as the view that schizophrenia is a neurological disease (Average score = 0.52/1); schizophrenia is an incurable disease (Average score = 0.50/1); schizophrenia is caused by demonic possession (0.09/1).

Regarding the age of onset of schizophrenia, 60.4% of caregivers believed that the disease began in adolescence, 24.5% believed that it began in middle age; 0.09% believed that it began in the elderly, and 14.2% did not know at what age the disease began. Thus, the number of caregivers who do not know at what age schizophrenia begins is still large.

Regarding the incidence of the disease by gender, the results showed that 71.7% said that the disease was not different between men and women. The remaining opinions were that men were more likely to be affected than women (10.4%); women were more likely to be affected than men (2.8%), and it was unclear (15.8%).

Regarding the causes and factors promoting the development of schizophrenia. Research results show that caregivers highly appreciate direct factors such as psychological trauma, prolonged stress, etc. Internal risk factors such as genetics, brain structure abnormalities, etc. are evaluated by caregivers at a lower level.

About the symptoms of schizophrenia. This is an aspect that caregivers are quite well aware of, because symptoms are what manifests externally. However, there is still a small number of caregivers who misperceive the symptoms of schizophrenia such as seizures (Average = 2.21/4); chest pain (Average = 2.56/4)

Regarding the treatment of schizophrenia patients, from this perspective, 39.6% of caregivers believe that schizophrenia is treatable; 37.7% of caregivers believe that the disease is not treatable and 22.6% of caregivers are not sure whether the disease is treatable.

Regarding treatments, most caregivers know about treatments for schizophrenic patients, but caregivers only focus on giving medication to patients. The use of rehabilitation therapies for schizophrenic patients such as work, sports, etc. has not been given much attention by caregivers.

Regarding the view on consolidation treatment, 67.9% of caregivers believed that schizophrenia requires lifelong consolidation treatment. 0.9% believed that consolidation treatment only needed 1 month; 7.5% believed that treatment needed 3 months; 0.9% thought it needed 6 months; 5.7% thought it needed 1 year and 17% were unclear about the duration of treatment.

Regarding care, caregivers generally have good awareness of all necessary contents in caring for patients with schizophrenia, however, home care practices are not high.

Caregiver perceptions of schizophrenia vary by caregiver age, education level, and occupation.
