The diplomatic relations between the Tay Son Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty (1789-1802) were a period marked by dramatic and significant events in the relationship between the two countries. This thesis contributes to the systematic, objective, and comprehensive reconstruction of the diplomatic relations between Dai Viet (during the Tay Son period) and China (during the Qing Dynasty) from 1789 to 1802, covering various aspects such as tribute ceremonies and the reception of imperial decrees, tribute trade activities, territorial border issues, and cultural relations. From this, observations and assessments of the characteristics of the Qing-Tay Son relationship are drawn: Tay Son diplomacy consistently demonstrated flexibility and shrewdness, while also exhibiting proactiveness, determination, and the preservation of national dignity, firmly protecting independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It can be said that maintaining peace with the North to focus on the South, enduring the powerful to preserve independence, building a developed country, and resolutely defending national sovereignty became the distinctive diplomatic art of the Tay Son dynasty in its dealings with the powerful Chinese neighbor.

These diplomatic lessons will be valuable for the current Vietnamese Party and State in skillfully maintaining national peace and protecting national security, especially in diplomatic relations with China.

We continue to explore the diplomatic relations between Dai Viet (during the Tay Son dynasty) and China (during the Qing dynasty) through new sources.
