- The thesis applies the theory of "Early Southeast Asian Commercial Era (900 - 1300)" by Geoff Wade and the theory of tributary relations proposed by Wang Gungwus to describe the relationship between Dai Viet and some regional countries in the context of Southeast Asia in the 10th - 15th centuries.

- In particular, the thesis focuses on economic and political relations with the view that despite the competition for political position among polities in the region, Dai Viet and other countries still maintain close trade relations with each other.

- The thesis not only reflects the main characteristics of the relationship between Dai Viet and some Southeast Asian countries but also analyzes the important impacts of these relationships on the changes taking place in each country as well as on the situation of the whole region over the past 5 centuries.
