10. Summary of the results of the thesis:
After studying the literature on anxiety disorders and related issues, we systematized the basic theories and therapeutic practices of anxiety disorders.Anxiety disorder is an emotional disorder that is clearly manifested by tension, fatigue, loss of concentration, increased physical states such as muscle tension, restlessness, rapid heartbeat, hot face; excessive behavior such as screaming, irritability, affecting activities, social relationships and manifestations lasting at least 6 months.
To assess and diagnose mental health problems including anxiety disorders, we can combine many different methods such as observation, clinical interview based on the diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorders according to DSM-5, ICD-10 and the results of some scales such as: RCADS-C depression assessment scale, CDI, generalized anxiety scale for children.
After the assessment and treatment process, the psychologist determined that this was a complex clinical case, quite typical of anxiety disorders. Family circumstances and personal experiences were factors that caused anxiety for the client.
The thesis has mainly used cognitive-behavioral approach to solve different problems of clients. It can be said that an important aspect of psychotherapy for people with anxiety disorders is that the therapist uses psychoeducational measures to help clients improve their understanding of how psychological disorders cause them. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) affects the client's awareness of dysfunctional beliefs and negative automatic thoughts. At the same time, this therapy equips clients with skills to effectively cope with psychological difficulties.
In fact, there are more and more cases of children with anxiety disorders but only a few of them receive professional psychological support. Only a few international schools currently have psychological support rooms to help students solve problems promptly. This is also an obstacle for students because sometimes they do not dare to tell their parents to go to see a therapist.
After 16 therapy sessions conducted in two treatment phases and a 2-month post-treatment follow-up, the psychologist found that the client had no more symptoms of anxiety such as: excessive worry, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hyperactive behavior, throwing things, swearing, and physical manifestations such as: sweaty hands, rapid heartbeat, chest tightness. The initial symptoms of depression such as: decreased energy, avoidance of contact with people, negative evaluation of oneself, of life and of one's future were also overcome.
Prevention of mental disorders is also emphasized through increasing clients' awareness of mental health as well as providing knowledge and effective positive coping skills.
In this study, the client had special circumstances, although only 12 years old, the client had emotional perception and observation abilities that were more mature than his age. Negative personal experiences with family and current circumstances should lead to such anxiety disorders.
The thesis used integrated therapies with cognitive-behavioral therapy as the focus to address various client problems.
Through the treatment process and post-treatment follow-up, we found that the client responded well to the treatment process. Cognitive: the client eliminated dysfunctional beliefs, reduced self-esteem about his situation, and evaluated himself more positively. Emotional: reduced negative emotions such as fear, shame, anxiety, and hatred. At the same time, experienced positive emotions such as joy, happiness, and excitement, and emotions were maintained more stably. Behavior: the client replaced stressful behavior with relaxation exercises, participated in useful activities such as housework, and interacted with people. The social environment around the client also improved through changes in perception of his father and friends, especially those of the opposite sex.
Clients can receive and flexibly use the guided techniques and skills. The techniques are effective, helping clients to control their own problems as well as develop social interaction skills.
Psychotherapy is very effective in helping clients adjust their negative beliefs about themselves, about people around them and about life. The therapy process also flexibly combines techniques from different approaches, especially cognitive-behavioral approaches, to bring the best results for children. The therapist also makes efforts to find other social support resources to facilitate the client.
11. Practical application:
With the results obtained from the theoretical and practical research process, the thesis has provided an overview of child anxiety disorders and treatment methods. From there, it shows that the assessment, screening, and detection of risks of anxiety disorders in children are very important. In addition, psychological support services in schools and social organizations also play an important role such as: families need to enhance their connection with their children, schools need to propose solutions to support school psychology to help children have a comprehensive development environment both physically and mentally.
