10. Summary of the thesis results:
Depressive disorder is a state of decreased mood, reduced interest in all activities, and decreased energy. In typical depressive disorder, patients exhibit a complete suppression of mental activity: sad and gloomy mood, reduced interest in all activities, a feeling of a bleak future, slow thinking, difficulty with associations, feelings of inferiority, reduced activity, loss of appetite, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. In severe cases, there may be delusions of guilt, suicidal thoughts, and behaviors.
Depression is characterized by a cognitive triangle in which individuals have a negative view of themselves, other people, the world, and the future. These negative perceptions are the mechanisms that sustain depressive symptoms in people with depressive disorders.
Clients with depressive disorders often exhibit several common cognitive patterns: Selective generalization, where, based on minor details like smiles, eye contact, or emotions, the client may conclude that others perceive them negatively; Exaggeration, where, after experiencing failed relationships with two men, the client believes all men are bad; and perfectionism, demanding perfection from themselves and everything around them. These cognitive errors lead to disappointment in themselves, others, and the world around them.
Applying cognitive therapy to clients with depressive disorders has helped them replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Specifically, clients are able to identify their own negative thoughts, develop skills to examine those negative thoughts, challenge them, and form positive thoughts that lead to a more accurate self-perception.
11. Practical applications:
Based on the results obtained from theoretical and practical research on a clinical case, this thesis presents an overview of a clinical case related to the cognitive aspect of depressive disorders in adults. It highlights the importance of addressing cognitive factors in therapeutic interventions for clients with depressive disorders. Furthermore, it proposes appropriate intervention techniques and strategies for clients with depressive disorders.
