Self-compassion is the feeling of understanding one's own suffering or misfortune, and accepting that suffering or misfortune with kindness, patience, equanimity, and a deep desire to alleviate it. Self-compassion is directly related to the care, kindness, and compassion one extends to oneself in the same way one extends to loved ones who are suffering.
Most of the study subjects had high levels of self-compassion and moderate levels of depression. There were almost no statistically significant differences in self-compassion levels between male and female student groups or between students of different majors, hometowns, etc.
Specifically, self-compassion (SC) was most strongly correlated with the Self-Kindness component (SK-SJ), followed by the Mindfulness component (MF-OI), and finally the Commonality component (CH-IS).
