10. Summary of the thesis results:

The thesis, titled “ASEAN’s cooperation on labor migration from 2007 to 2020,” provides an overview of the labor migration situation in the region, the countries with trends in sending and receiving migrant workers, thereby highlighting the urgent need for ASEAN cooperation in this area. Simultaneously, the thesis summarizes the cooperation process of ASEAN member states prior to 2007 and the impetus for continued cooperation from 2007 to 2020. The author chose 2007 as the research point because at that time, ASEAN issued the “ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers,” the first official ASEAN document related to this issue. In this thesis, the author also synthesizes the results of ASEAN cooperation on labor migration from 2007 to 2020, presented in both policy and practice aspects. Furthermore, the thesis delves into three case studies: Singapore, the Philippines, and Vietnam, representing the countries receiving and sending migrant workers, and the ASEAN Chair in 2020 – the concluding year of this thesis. 2020 is a very special year for ASEAN as it marks the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the ASEAN Community, and also the mid-term review of the implementation of the ASEAN Community 2015-2020, completing the implementation of a series of action plans between ASEAN and its partners. Through a comprehensive overview and in-depth case studies, this thesis highlights the achievements and limitations of ASEAN in implementing policies in practice, the challenges and opportunities in the cooperation process, and especially the author's suggestions for improving cooperation and achieving practical impacts on migrant labor in the region.

11. Practical Applications: With the results presented in section 10, this thesis will contribute to policymakers and researchers an overview of ASEAN cooperation in the field of labor migration from 2007 to 2020, highlighting achievements and limitations, opportunities and challenges—an area not previously explored by many researchers, especially in Vietnam. Simultaneously, the thesis will offer suggestions for improving cooperation and achieving tangible impacts on migrant labor in the region.

12. Future Research Directions: In the future, the author hopes to conduct further research into the participation of each ASEAN member in this cooperation. Additionally, the author hopes to further investigate this issue from the perspective of international relations theory.

11. Summary of the findings of the thesis:

The thesis gives an overview of the situation of labor migration in the region, with information on originating and hosting countries, thereby realizing the urgent need of ASEAN's cooperation in this area. At the same time, the thesis also summarizes the cooperation process of ASEAN as a whole before 2007 and the incentives for continuing this cooperation from 2007 to 2020. The author chooses 2007 as a starting point of the time frame of the thesis because at that time, ASEAN issued the "ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers", the ASEAN's first official document regarding this issue. In the thesis, the author also summarizes the results of ASEAN's cooperation on labor migration from 2007 to 2020, which is presented in both policies and practical actions. Not only that, the thesis chooses Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam as the case studies since they respectively represent hosting and sending countries, and ASEAN Chair 2020. 2020 is a very special year for ASEAN because it marks 5 years of establishment of the ASEAN Community, as well as a mid-term review period for the implementation of building the ASEAN Community 2015-2020. What is more, the thesis draws on the achievements and limitations of ASEAN when bringing policies into practical actions, along with opportunities and challenges that this 53-year-old association is facing. In addition to this, the author introduces some recommendations for better cooperation process in order to help migrant workers in the region.

12. Practical applicability, if any:

With the results mentioned in section 10, the thesis is expected to give policy makers and researchers an overview of ASEAN's cooperation on labor migration from 2007 to 2020, which hasn't been done before by many researchers, especially in Vietnam. At the same time, the thesis introduces some recommendations for better cooperation process in order to help migrant workers in the region.

13. Further research directions, if any:

In the future, the author wishes to further study the participation of each member of ASEAN in this cooperation. In addition, the author also hopes to be able to dig into this issue from the perspective of international relations theory.
