The thesis has a structure of 3 chapters. Chapter 1: Refers to instrumental concepts as a basis for studying the issue such as the concept of FDI, FDI capital, FDI capital structure. This chapter also presents the trend of FDI flows in the world in recent decades; presents the current status of investment capital in Vietnam before Doi Moi, thereby pointing out the necessity of attracting FDI capital for Vietnam's socio-economic development. Chapter 2: This is the main content of the thesis and also the new point of the thesis when studying foreign direct investment activities in Vietnam. This chapter first introduces the innovation in economic development thinking and the formation of the Foreign Investment Law of Vietnam as factors that open the way for foreign direct investment activities in Vietnam. From there, focus on studying the changes in the structure of FDI capital in the years 1988 - 2008, which are reflected in the changes in the value of FDI capital, the changes in the structure of FDI classified by economic sector, the changes in the structure of FID classified by investment form, the changes in the structure of FDI classified by territory and the changes in the structure of FDI classified by investment partners.
