Chapter 1: Addresses instrumental concepts to serve as the basis for studying the problem, such as the concept of FDI, FDI capital, and FDI capital structure. This chapter also presents the trend of FDI flows worldwide in recent decades; presents the current state of investment capital in Vietnam before the Doi Moi (Renovation) period, thereby highlighting the necessity of attracting FDI capital for Vietnam's socio-economic development. Chapter 2: This is the main content of the thesis and also the new aspect of the thesis when studying foreign direct investment activities in Vietnam. This chapter first introduces the innovations in economic development thinking and the formation of Vietnam's Foreign Investment Law, which serve as pioneering factors paving the way for foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam. From there, it focuses on studying the changes in the structure of FDI capital sources during the years 1988-2008, as reflected in the changes in the value of FDI capital, the changes in FDI structure by economic sector, the changes in FDI structure by investment form, the changes in FDI structure by region, and the changes in FDI structure by investment partner. Chapter 3 focuses on studying the impact of FDI capital on Vietnam's socio-economic development during the years 1988-2008 from two perspectives: positive impacts and negative impacts. Based on the research results above, the thesis points out some characteristics of the structural changes in FDI capital sources, the limitations in the process of attracting FDI in Vietnam during the years 1988-2008, and also outlines the challenges and prospects for attracting FDI in Vietnam in the future. From there, it proposes some directional solutions to enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of Vietnam in attracting FDI, especially high-quality FDI capital.

The chapter goes further with deep research of changes in FDI capital structure over the 1988 - 2008 period in terms of capital amount, sector of industry, method of investment, geographical area, and investment partner. Chapter 3 concentrates on the positive and negative sociometric effects of FDI in Vietnam from year 1988 to 2008. Based on the findings, this thesis figures out some characteristics of the changes of FDI capital structure, the negative effects of FDI inflows into Vietnam over the 1988-2008 period, the challenges and prospects for FDI capital attraction in the coming years as well as solutions for improving the competitiveness of the country in FDI attraction, especially high quality FDI.
