Chapter 1: Defining the term “epiphany” in The Dubliners

By exploring the semantic diversity of the word "epiphany" in religion and literature, this thesis concludes that the term "epiphany" inDublinersIt means "sudden enlightenment." It is a spiritual manifestation, an awareness, or an awakening of the soul, about life, a sudden understanding, a sudden discovery of the essence or meaning of something or someone. The overarching theme of "sudden enlightenment" inDublinersIt is the state of paralysis, stagnation, and hopelessness experienced by the characters. The "sudden enlightenment" forms the basis of Joyce's short story content, not the plot itself.

Chapter 2: The "Enlightenment" Motifs in The Dubliners

The thesis identifies and analyzes three main motifs of "enlightenment": "enlightenment" about the "self," "enlightenment" about the nation, and "enlightenment" about religion.

Chapter 3: The Art of Creating "Enlightenment" in The Dubliners

The circular labyrinth shape and the autumnal colors of Dublin are among the aspects that help readers "realize" the paralysis of Dublin society. The circular labyrinth shape is created from the darkness of night, from the space of Dublin's winding streets; from the repetitive nature of human activities; from the unfulfilled desires and aspirations of the characters...

The clash of sight and hearing is the mechanism that allows the character to have precious moments of "enlightenment" in their paralyzed life.

The collection of stories features a number of symbolic sounds, windows, paintings, photographs, and mirrors that help the characters and the reader achieve a state of "enlightenment."

This thesis is one of the research directions on the content and artistic value inDublinersby Joyce.
