Scientific Advisor: Dr. Truong Khanh Ha – Deputy Head of the Psychology Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. 10. Summary of Thesis Results: a. In terms of theory: The thesis has presented basic concepts of emotions, clearly showing the psychological changes of first-time mothers through the literature. It has explored some factors influencing a mother's emotions: the husband's care and attention during pregnancy; the child's physical characteristics; the mother-in-law-daughter-in-law relationship; the husband's involvement and support in raising the child… b. In terms of practice: First-time mothers face many challenges. We have investigated the emotions of first-time mothers in several specific situations, such as: welcoming their child for the first time; when the child is sick or has a poor appetite; witnessing the child's first developmental milestones (when the child learns to roll over, crawl, walk, etc.); playing together; the mother being tired and stressed due to work; and changes in the relationship with the mother-in-law. Changes in the relationship with husband after having a child… In each situation, mothers experience very different emotions, including basic human emotions: sadness, joy, happiness, anxiety, stress, and fatigue. When faced with negative emotions, not every mother can easily overcome them; in fact, these emotions can dominate daily life and the mother's thinking. Of course, these emotions will affect the family atmosphere in general and the child's overall development, especially their emotional development. Specifically, we have the following results: - The first time receiving their child from the doctor, the first time holding their child in their warm arms, seeing their "little angel" right in front of them, mothers are overwhelmed with emotion, a happiness indescribable. These are emotional experiences that mothers have never had in their lives—such wonderful moments. Especially for mothers who have gone through so much hardship to have this child, that emotion becomes even more magical and sublime. The biggest worry and sorrow for mothers is when their child is sick. This is their greatest concern; they always want their child to be healthy and free from illness. A healthy child is a source of joy and happiness for the mother. When their child is sick, with the boundless love and affection a mother has for her child, she inevitably feels worried and sad. But how do they overcome those emotions? Most mothers remain calm and confident, taking meticulous care of their children in many different ways to help them recover quickly. They consult doctors, ask for advice from experienced people, read information in the media, and seek opinions from friends and those around them. However, among these mothers, some become overly stressed when their child is sick, not knowing what to do, relying entirely on others – relatives – to care for their child because they are confused and don't know how to handle the situation. - In their relationship with their husband, things change significantly in two ways: the marital relationship becomes happier and closer, or becomes more distant and dull than before. Research results show that although they are happier, the majority experience increased conflict and tension between the couple after the birth of their first child. - In their relationship with their mother-in-law: Changes occur, with more conflicts and disagreements, mainly due to differing views on raising children and grandchildren. Some conflicts are easily resolved, but others become quite tense. Mothers always want their mothers-in-law to understand them, be empathetic, share their feelings, and respect them more. In general, first-time mothers experience a mix of emotions, fluctuating between joy and sadness, feeling vulnerable and easily moved. Sometimes they become more patient, sometimes short-tempered, sometimes mature, and sometimes prone to unwarranted anger. But one thing all mothers share is that after having children, they feel more love, respect, and appreciation for their parents. Only then do they truly understand the immense love and sacrifices their parents have made for them – "only when you become a parent do you understand a mother's love."

Major: Psychology 9. Code: 603180 10. Supervisors: PhD. Truong Khanh Ha – Vice Dean of Faculty of Psychology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: a. On theoretical aspect, the thesis has provided basic concepts of feelings which clearly show psychological changes in a mother's feeling in her first delivery. Some causes affecting the mother's feelings are also found out, including: her husband's care during her pregnancy, physical features of the baby's body, relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, her husband's care and sharing in parenting, etc. b. On practical aspect, a number of problems occur during the mother's first delivery We have learned feelings of the mother during her first delivery in some specific situations such as, the first time to receive the baby; when the baby is sick or has anorexia; When seeing first steps of the baby's growth for the first time (as the baby knows how to roll over, crawl, walk, etc.); when the mother and the baby play together, when the mother feels tired or stressed due to her work; changes in the relationship with her mother-in-law; changes in the relationship with her husband after giving birth, etc. In each case, the mother has very different feelings and experiences basic human emotions such as, sadness, happiness, anxiety, stress, or tiredness. When falling into negative feelings, not all mothers feel easy to overcome them, even such feelings dominate their daily life and thinking. Of course, these feelings will affect the atmosphere of her family in general and affect the comprehensive development of the baby, especially its emotions. We have found out the specific results as follows: - When mothers receive their baby from the doctor for the first time, hold the baby in their warm arms, or see their “little angel” in person, they can't help feeling extremely moved which is hard to say in words. They are emotional experiences and wonderful moments that the mothers have never experienced in their life. In particular, such feelings become more wonderful to the mothers who have many difficulties in this delivery. - In most cases, sickness of the baby makes the mother most worried and distressed. This is the greatest concern of mothers because they always expect their baby to be healthy. A healthy baby will be mothers' joy and happiness. When the baby gets sick, the mothers cannot avoid worry and sadness as their love for the baby is boundless. Then, how do they overcome such feelings? Most mothers are calm and confident to give thoughtful care to their baby child in many different ways so that their baby can get better soon. They take their baby to see the doctor, ask experienced people for experience, learn information on mass media, or seek advice from their friends and surrounding people. However, some mothers who fall into this case have become too stressed when their baby is sick. They do not know what to do and completely rely on others or relatives to look after their baby because they become confused and do not know how to handle the case. - There are changes in the relationship between the mothers and their husbands in two trends: the husband-wife relationship becomes closer and they become happier or they become more estranged and cooler than before. The study result indicates that in most cases, after the first baby is born, the conflicts and tensions between the wife and husband are two times higher than the previous time whether they are happier. - There are changes and in the relationship between the mothers and their mother-in-law, and more conflicts occur during this time. This is mainly due to dissent in raising the baby. Some conflicts are easy to be resolved, but some make their relationship become quite stressful. The mothers always expect their mother-in-law to understand, share work with them, and respect them more. In general, in their first delivery, the mothers feel surprised, have psychological changes, such as sudden happiness or sadness, or sometimes become easy to sad and moved. Sometimes, they become more patient, angry, thoughtful, or irritated for no reason. However, there is one thing that is shared by most mothers is that after giving the first baby, they love and respect their parents more. They pervade the love and great services of their parents. Only when we have baby, we know the parents' heart.
