Depression is a mental health problem that is becoming increasingly common in today's modern society. Anyone at any age is at risk of depression. People whose gender identity does not match their body are at higher risk of depression due to gender dysphoria and/or lack of favorable family and social environments for self-expression.
This thesis studies a case of an adolescent with depression related to gender identity, who received psychological intervention using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined with Mindfulness.
Post-intervention results showed that clients’ depressive symptoms, functional activities, and academic performance were improved. Clients also learned to self-monitor and recognize their negative thoughts, and restructured their cognitions in a more positive direction. These results demonstrate and reinforce the effectiveness of the Cognitive-Behavioral intervention combined with Mindfulness for depression related to gender identity.
