Although W.B. Yeats is a Nobel Prize-winning poet and has been globally renowned for over 100 years, he has not received widespread attention in Vietnam, neither among academic nor general readers. Throughout Yeats' literary career, folklore inspiration is a viable approach to begin researching and introducing Yeats in Vietnam. This thesis studies folklore symbolism in W.B. Yeats' poetry, drawing on Irish folklore. Using the structural and semiotic methods of Iu. Lotman, this study examines mythical figures and spaces in relation to: the semiotics of Irish culture and national history; the structure of folklore symbolism in W.B. Yeats' poetry along the axis of paradigms and phrasal structures; and the discrepancy between "Irish identity" and "Irish character" in W.B. Yeats' poetry. The study of the symbolic structure in Yeats's poetry reveals: 1) the shifting of the lyrical persona within poetic space and the role of geographical space in relation to the persona; 2) how the sense of mythical persona-mythical space constructs national discourse; and 3) the gray areas of national identity in Yeats's poetry. This topic is a development of a 2007 student scientific report on WB Yeats's poetry and the author's 2020 graduation thesis, with the desire to extend the exploration for a new research direction in Vietnam.
11. Practical applications: This thesis can be used as a reference for research topics in related and closely related fields: folklore, comparative literature, Irish literature, WB Yeats, English poetry, semiotics, Tartu cultural semiotics, cultural symbols, symbols in poetry, national discourse, national identity.
12. Future research directions:
  • Within the scope of WB Yeats's entire collection of poems, we examine the structure of the symbolic systems of world folklore.
  • From the perspective of folklore symbolism, the research scope is expanded to include WB Yeats's entire body of work across all literary genres.
  • Placing WB Yeats's nationalist discourse within the historical context of the struggle for independence in the Irish territories, combined with his theories in *A Vision*, provides a prediction about the situation in Northern Ireland.

Although WB Yeats was a Nobel Prize-winning poet and has been internationally famous for over 100 years, he is still not widely recognized in Vietnam by both academics and mass readers. Being exploited throughout Yeats's literary career, folklore inspiration is a viable approach to begin researching and introducing Yeats in Vietnam. The thesis studies symbols of folklore in the section of WB Yeats's poetry that includes Irish folk literature. By Ju. Lotman's structural and cultural semiotic methods, this research surveys symbols of mythical characters and spaces in relation to: Irish cultural semiosphere and Irish national history; the structure of folklore symbols in WB Yeats's poetry according to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes; and the disparity between “Irish identity” and “Irishness” in WB Yeats's poetry. Describing the structure of the symbolic system in Yeats's poetry helps reveal: 1) the movement of lyrical characters in poetic space and the role of geographical space for the characters; 2) how the sense of mythical character-mythical space constructs national discourse; and 3) the gray area of national identity in Yeats's poetry. This topic is a development from a 2007 student science report on WB Yeats's poetry and the author's own graduation thesis in 2020, with the desire to expand exploring a new direction of research in Vietnam.
12. Practical applicability, if any: The thesis can be used as a reference for similar topics in the right and close fields: folklore, comparative literature, Irish literature, WB Yeats, English poetry, semiotics , cultural semiotics of Tartu, cultural symbols, symbols in poetry, national discourse, national identity.
