Although WB Yeats is a Nobel Prize-winning poet and has been famous worldwide for more than 100 years, he has not been widely known in Vietnam to both academic and popular readers. Exploited throughout Yeats's literary career, folklore inspiration is a viable approach to begin researching and introducing Yeats in Vietnam. This thesis studies folklore symbols in WB Yeats's poetry with Irish folklore poetics. Using the structural and cultural semiotic methods of Iu. Lotman, this study examines the symbols of characters and mythical spaces in relation to: the Irish cultural semiotic sphere and Irish national history; the structure of folklore symbols in WB Yeats's poetry according to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes; and the difference between "Irish identity" and "Irishness" in WB Yeats's poetry. The study of the symbolic structure in Yeats's poetry helps to reveal: 1) the movement of the lyrical character in the poetic space and the role of geographical space for the character; 2) the way in which the sense of legendary character-mythical space constructs national discourse; and 3) the gray area of national identity in Yeats's poetry. This topic is a development from a 2007 student scientific report on WB Yeats's poetry and the author's own graduation thesis in 2020, with the desire to extend the exploration for a new research direction in Vietnam.
11. Practical applicability: The thesis can be used as a reference for research topics in the right and close fields: folklore, comparative literature, Irish literature, WB Yeats, English poetry, semiotics, Tartu cultural semiotics, cultural symbols, symbols in poetry, national discourse, national identity.
12. Further research directions:
  • Within the scope of WB Yeats's complete poetry collection, describe the structure of the world's folk cultural symbol system.
  • From the perspective of folk cultural symbols, expanding the scope of research to cover the entire work of WB Yeats in all literary genres.
  • Situating WB Yeats's nationalist discourse within the history of the struggle for independence in the territories of the island of Ireland, combined with his theory in A Vision, predicts the Northern Ireland question.

Describing the structure of the symbolic system in Yeats's poetry helps reveal: 1) the movement of lyrical characters in poetic space and the role of geographical space for the characters; 2) how the sense of mythical character-mythical space constructs national discourse; and 3) the gray area of national identity in Yeats's poetry.
