This thesis synthesizes and analyzes nationalism in Europe from 2004 to the first half of 2015, highlighting the correlation between nationalism and regionalism. From this, the author hopes to provide an objective view of the nature of nationalism and its impact on the survival of regional organizations of which it is a member and the development of those nations.

Drawing lessons from the European Union's process of resolving ethnic conflicts, reconciliation, and cooperation, this study also offers insights that ASEAN can apply to strengthen regional linkages and deeper integration.

The European Union (EU) remains a model for development for many regional organizations worldwide, thanks to its socio-economic achievements and harmonious values. Studying the EU's response to global changes, particularly in addressing the relationship between nationalism and regionalism, will provide valuable lessons for Vietnam in particular and Southeast Asia in general.

12. Future research directions:

Based on an assessment and identification of the characteristics of European nationalism, this study can serve as a foundation for further research on the impact of nationalism on the responses of countries to EU regional integration and EU expansion in particular, and the influence of nationalism on the decision-making of countries in international relations worldwide in general.

With the purpose of gathering and analyzing all aspects of nationalism in Europe from 2004 till present, the thesis will point out the relation between nationalism and regionalism. Based on those ideas, the author will provide an external angle on the nature of nationalism and its effects on the existence of regional organization which the nation belongs to as a nation member and its development as well.

With lesson from nationalism reconciliation and cooperation of EU nation members, the lesson performs practical resolution for ASEAN nations how to strengthen the relations among nations and deeply integrate into the regional organization.

11. Practical applicability, if any:

European Union is seen as a stark example of developed and successful organizations for so many other regional integration in the world with many economic and social achievements with undeniable harmonic values ​​that the Union has reached. By studying EU reactions to regionalism and nationalism in present world scenario will give Vietnam in particular and other Southeast Asian nations in general useful lesson to enhance comprehensive understanding and partnership in the region.

By considering nationalism from many aspects to figure out its features in Europe, the thesis can be seen as a reference for other researches focusing on EU nations' reaction to regional integration in particular and effects of nationalism on international relations in general
