10. Summary of the thesis results

- "The Western Tonkin Diocese in the Political and Social Relationship of the 19th Century" studies the relationship between the diocese and Vietnamese political and social issues during a period of significant historical change.

- This topic is a valuable and meaningful study that contributes to clarifying the attitudes and actions of diocesan bishops in relation to the contemporary political and social situation.

- Based on archival sources, especially works and research on Vietnamese Catholicism, this thesis initially offers interpretations of the attitudes and behaviors of bishops in particular and Catholics in the Western Tonkin in general towards socio-political issues.

- They neither remained passive nor actively aided the French colonialists, but always maintained a conciliatory attitude. Therefore, when the imperial court issued decrees banning Christianity, then proceeded to arrest and persecute Catholics, attacking and suppressing them, the Christians and priests only dared to resist through resignation, not by rising up and using weapons to fight back.

- As an exception, there were still Christians who were drawn into rebellions. There were bishops of dioceses who directly and actively advised the colonial government during the second invasion of Tonkin and the pacification of the region.

- Social volunteer activities such as opening schools, nursing homes, hospitals, orphanages, etc., and close relationships with other religions have contributed to creating equal social relations in a turbulent historical context.

11. This thesis is valuable as a reference and enriches research on dioceses in general and the Western Tonkin diocese in particular within the socio-political context of the 19th century. Through this, it contributes to the development and adjustment of religious unity policies in Hanoi.
