Summary of the thesis results: The Self-Reliance Literary Group holds an important position in modern Vietnamese literature. They made significant contributions to the modernization of literature in the early 20th century. There are many opinions and research works on this literary group, even with conflicting viewpoints. This thesis has explored the image of women from the perspective of a crucial character that helps express the thoughts and creative viewpoints of the writers. The conflict between the old and new generations of women has brought many interesting and successful aspects to the works. Through our research, we find that the Self-Reliance Literary Group is not only romantic and escapist but also very realistic, especially in recreating the conflicts within the family between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and stepmother and stepchild. The writers of the Self-Reliance Literary Group created realistic and vivid female characters, whether representing the old generation or the progressive ideas of the era, through unique and innovative descriptions of the characters' physical and inner lives, paving the way for the renewal of modern novel writing later on. 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: Tu Luc Van Doan was a literary movement that played an important role in modern Vietnamese Literature. Despite lots of discrepant opinions of its works, it is still known to have made great contribution to the modernization of Vietnamese literature in the early 20th century. The portrait of women described in the works of Tu Luc Van Doan, like in many other writers' works, was of great importance in expressing ideals and the writers' point of view. The conflicts between the two female generations, traditional and modern, make their works more interesting and successful. On studying their works as well as their female characters, we realize that Tu Luc Van Doan is not only a group of romantic but also very realistic writing, especially in exposing the conflicts between female family members such as mother and daughter-in-law, or step-mother and her husband's children. We find the female characters in their works - representatives of either traditional or modern generation- real, and active due to the new and individual style of describing the physical attractiveness and spiritual beauty. This kind of writing paved the way for the modernization of art in after modern novels. 12. Practical applicability, if any: None 13. Further research directions, if any: None 14.
