They have made many great contributions to the modernization of literature in the early years of the 20th century. There are many opinions and research works on this literary group, even with conflicting views. The thesis has exploited the image of women from the perspective of an important character that helps express the thoughts and creative views of the writers. The conflict between the old and new generations of women has brought many interesting things and successes to the work. Through the research, we found that Tu Luc Van Doan is not only romantically escapist but also very realistic, especially in recreating the conflicts in the family between mother-in-law - daughter-in-law, stepmother - stepchild. The writers of the Self-Reliant Literary Group have created images of women, whether representing the old generation or the progressive ideas of the times, that are very realistic and vivid, through the art of describing the appearance and inner feelings of the characters in a unique, new way, completely different from the tradition, which has paved the way for the innovation of the art of writing modern novels later. 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: Tu Luc Van Doan was a literary movement that played an important role in modern Vietnamese Literature. Despite lots of discrepant opinions of its works, it is still known to have made great contribution to the modernization of Vietnamese literature in the early 20th century. The portrait of women described in the works of Tu Luc Van Doan, like in many other writers' works, was of great importance in expressing ideals and the writers' point of view. The conflicts between the two female generations, traditional and modern, make their works more interesting and successful. On studying their works as well as their female characters, we realize that Tu Luc Van Doan is not only a group of romantic but also very realistic writing, especially in exposing the conflicts between female family members such as mother and daughter-in-law, or step-mother and her husband's children. We find the female characters in their works - representatives of either traditional or modern generation- real, and active due to the new and individual style of describing the physical attractiveness and spiritual beauty. This kind of writing paved the way for the modernization of art in after modern novels. 12. Practical applicability, if any: None 13. Further research directions, if any: None 14.
