Taking the case study of Kim Lien collective housing area, the thesis studies the changes in types of space: private space (household), public space; and explains the causes of those changes.
- The thesis has outlined the process of forming collective housing areas in Hanoi in general in the context of the city after 1954. Then, the thesis limits the scope of research to Kim Lien collective housing area, describing the process of residents gradually being assigned to live in blocks of houses in area B and the relationship between residents here. This is the novelty of anthropological research on the lifestyle in collective housing areas, while other works only focus on architecture, materials and requirements for renovating old apartments.
- The thesis raises the issue of studying spaces and is based on Henri Lefebvre's spatial theory. This is a strong point of the thesis when combining theories to explain the formation and transformation of three types of spaces: private spaces in households, common (semi-public) spaces between floors and public spaces outside the buildings.
- The thesis also analyzes the negotiation process between residents in creating living spaces suitable to the needs of individuals and communities, suitable to each socio-economic context of Vietnam.
- The thesis is practical and useful with a lot of information towards understanding urban lifestyle, urban anthropology, heritage perspective on the image of collective housing influenced by Soviet architecture in Hanoi.
