10. Summary of the thesis results:
This thesis delves into three main conflicts in the relationship between Japan and China from the end of the Cold War to 2012. These conflicts stem from historical origins, the dispute over the Senkaku Islands (as called by Japan) and Diaoyu Islands (as called by China), and the power struggle in East Asia. Regarding the power struggle in East Asia, numerous issues were addressed, such as the competition for influence and status between China and Japan in Southeast Asia, the Taiwan dispute, security and defense, and Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
Following the Cold War, the global landscape underwent significant changes. East Asia became the focus of global attention, with Japan and China receiving particular interest. The relationship between these two countries experienced ups and downs, directly or indirectly impacting the regional and global situation. In particular, the situation in East Asia in general, and Northeast Asia in particular, has become increasingly complex recently. Conflicts between nations, especially major powers, are the most significant threat to peace and security in the region.
The two countries normalized relations in 1972. After more than 40 years, many unresolved issues remain. These are two countries with significant economic and military power, belonging to the group of the world's largest nations. Therefore, these contentious issues between China and Japan not only affect the relationship between the two countries but also influence international relations in the region and even globally. Studying the conflicts in the relationship between Japan and China and predicting the possibilities for resolving these conflicts has profound scientific and practical significance.
This thesis focuses on researching and analyzing the conflicts in the relationship between Japan and China from the end of the Cold War to 2012. These conflicts are obstacles that make it difficult for the two countries to establish a good and lasting relationship. At the same time, the remaining contentious issues between Japan and China have, are, and will continue to negatively impact their relationship in many areas and have a significant impact on other countries in the region.
If considered separately, both China and Japan possess immense economic and military power, capable of dominating the situation in Northeast Asia at present. Therefore, the relationship between Japan and China directly impacts Northeast Asia and significantly affects Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. Furthermore, these two countries are intensely competing for influence in Southeast Asia. Analyzing the conflicts in their relationship and their competition for influence in Southeast Asia can provide a clearer understanding of each country's future policy direction towards Southeast Asia in general and Vietnam in particular. From this analysis, Vietnam can formulate the most appropriate diplomatic policies regarding Japan and China in the current period.
12.Further research directions:
Conflicts in the relationship between China and Japan are predicted to continue in the coming years. Therefore, research on the relationship and conflicts between the two countries in the near future will be one of the areas that can be further studied. In addition, the competition for influence between Japan and China in Southeast Asia in particular and East Asia in general is also a topic that can be studied in greater depth in the future.
