5. Decision on student admission No. 1883/2010/QD-XHNV-SDH dated October 21, 2010, by the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

6. Changes in the training process: None

7. Thesis title:The transformation from static to dynamic predicates in Vietnamese.

8. Major: Linguistics Code: 60.22.01

9. Scientific supervisor:Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Con- Department of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities

10. Summary of the thesis results:

Besides the introduction and conclusion, the main content of the thesis is presented in 4 chapters:

Chapter 1. Theoretical Basis: This chapter provides an overview of the theoretical issues related to the topic. It discusses fundamental concepts: the concept of predicates, the typology of events, the distinction between dynamic and static predicates, and the transformation of Vietnamese predicates from static to dynamic. Based on establishing a theoretical framework for the scope of the topic, we will also present our own viewpoint and the direction the thesis will follow in the research process.

Chapter 2. The transformation of Vietnamese predicates from static to dynamic in structures with directional elements.

Based on the Vietnamese predicate classification system and general issues concerning directional words in Vietnamese, this thesis describes the transformation of static predicates into dynamic predicates in the combination type containing "static predicate + directional word," in which the transformation is further divided into predicates of posture transforming into action predicates and predicates of state transforming into predicates of process.

Chapter 3. The transformation of Vietnamese predicates from static to dynamic in causative-resultative structures: analyzing the role of the central predicate in causative-resultative structures and successively examining cases of semantic transformation from static to dynamic of these predicates in terms of changes in physical properties and changes in the state and characteristics of the object.

Chapter 4. The transformation of static to dynamic predicates in structures with temporal-modal elements: Examining the ability of adverbs of speed, surprise, temporal-modal elements, and modal elements to support the transformation of static to dynamic predicates in Vietnamese.

11. Practical applications:

Applications include compiling Vietnamese grammar reference books, Vietnamese language textbooks, and Vietnamese dictionaries.

12. Future research directions:

+ Survey of semantic transformation (in general) in Vietnamese

+ Compare and contrast the transformation of Vietnamese predicates with those of other languages.

13. Published works related to the thesis: None

11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: Besides the introduction and conclusion, the main content of the thesis is presented in 4 chapters:

Chapter 1. Theoretical Foundations: an overview of theoretical issues related to the topic. Discussion of basic concepts: predicate, typology of states of affairs, the dynamic–stative distinction and the transformation of Vietnamese predicates. Based on establishing a theoretical framework for the scope of the research, we will also present our own views and directions that thesis will follow during the research.

Chapter 2. The transformation of static predicates to dynamic predicates in the construction with the directional adverbs

Derived from the classification system of Vietnamese predicates and the common issues of Vietnamese directional adverbs, we describe the transformation from stative to dynamic of predicates in the structures with directional adverbs. The main part of this chapter describes the semantic-syntactic characteristics of transformational predicates (P) in two branches: from State (P) become Process (P), and from Position (P) become Action (P).

Chapter 3. The transformation of static predicates to dynamic predicates in the causative-resultative structures: we analyze the role of nuclear predicates in causative-resultative structures and go in turn to the cases of physical properties and the state of object transformation.

Chapter 4. The transformation of static predicates to dynamic predicates with the support of Tense, Aspect and Modal words: the adverbs of surprise and speed also belong to this group.

12. Practical applicability:

Applications in compiling reference Vietnamese grammar books, Vietnamese textbooks/course books and Vietnamese dictionaries.

13. Further research directions:

+ Research the transformation of verbs' meaning and function (in general) in Vietnamese

+ Compare this phenomenon in other languages

14. Thesis-related publications: none
