Studying the world of characters in Somerest Maugham's short stories, we draw the following conclusions:
- Along with novels, short stories are a very attractive field for Somerest Maugham. In fact, this is the genre that Maugham writes very happily, regularly and also receives much attention from readers. Short stories bring the writer to literary fate, and it is also the short story that he has achieved certain achievements throughout his writing journey. It is a genre close to daily life and very dynamic when delving into hot, pressing issues that readers are interested in. Therefore, for Maugham, writing short stories is as natural as people breathing to survive. Every scene of life he has gone through and witnessed can become the subject for the writer to distill into artistic form. And short stories are the genre that helps artists freely create their works from countless pieces of reality like that.
- Through the types of degenerate characters, tragic characters, and benevolent characters, Somerest Maugham expressed a burning desire to perfect humanity.
