By studying the world of characters in Somerset Maugham's short stories, we draw the following conclusions:
Along with novels, short stories were a fascinating field for Somerset Maugham. In fact, this was the genre Maugham wrote with great enthusiasm, frequently, and which garnered significant reader interest. Short stories led the writer to his literary career, and it was also through them that he achieved considerable success throughout his writing journey. Being a genre close to everyday life and dynamic in its focus on pressing issues of public interest, writing short stories was as natural for Maugham as breathing for survival. Every scene he witnessed and experienced could become a subject for him to distill into artistic form. And the short story is the genre that allows the artist to freely create his works from countless fragments of reality.
- Through characters who are alienated, tragic, and virtuous, Somerset Maugham expressed a burning desire for human perfection. He sought to trace the origins of evil and the multifaceted manifestations of alienation in human character by deeply exploring and dissecting the actions and hidden psychological developments of his characters, with the aim of prompting readers to reflect on themselves and draw lessons for self-improvement.
- On his journey into the world of art, Somerset Maugham considered human beings as the object and material for perceiving reality and creating art. Furthermore, these character models contribute to profoundly expressing the writer's artistic conceptions of human destiny and life.
