Applying poetics and narrative theory to the study of folklore, this thesis analyzes the characteristics of character types and character development; it delves into the art of narrative as expressed through: storytelling techniques, tone, structure, motifs, narrative space, etc., in Tay-Nung folk tales. Through this thesis, the author also points out the true value of folk tales and their role in passing on traditions in the community life of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups today.
