As mentioned throughout this thesis, this is a rather sensitive area for journalism when reporting on minors. Because they are in a stage of psychophysiological development with many changes in perception and behavior, they are very susceptible to crises, leading to bad or reckless behavior, directly affecting their personality if they do not receive regular and timely counseling, care, and education from family, school, and society. Therefore, journalism reporting on juvenile delinquency aims to deter and educate them, helping them recognize their wrongdoings, while also having a preventative effect on society as a whole.
With the research topic "Processing Information on Juvenile Delinquents in Online Newspapers," this thesis focused on the following aspects: methods of information processing, content, and format of information written about juvenile delinquents in three online newspapers: Dan Tri, VnExpress, and Tuoi Tre. It surveyed five prominent cases: the Le Van Luyen gold shop massacre in Bac Giang; the My "Wolf" case, leading a gang that raped young girls in Hanoi; the Nguyen Cong Bao case (15 years old) killing Cai Luong artist Do Linh; the Le Tuan Anh case (born in 1995, residing in Quang Chau commune, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province) sentenced to 18 years in prison for "rape" and "murder"; and the Nguyen Kha Dat case, a rebellious son who killed his mother and hid her body in a jar in Kien Giang. Therefore, this thesis evaluates the advantages and limitations in disseminating information about juvenile offenders, aiming to improve the quality and effectiveness of information about this group, thereby contributing to deterrence, education, and overall prevention for society as a whole.
Chapter 1 of the thesis outlines and clarifies several theoretical and practical issues regarding the concept of online journalism, juvenile delinquency, and the role of journalism in providing information about juvenile offenders. In particular, it examines the legal and ethical foundations for journalists reporting on this group in online journalism today.
In Chapter 2, the thesis surveys the frequency of news articles and the level of reader interest; the methods of information processing; the content of information; and the forms of information regarding juvenile delinquency through five representative cases: the massacre committed by Le Van Luyen at the Ngoc Bich gold shop in Bac Giang province in 2011; the case led by the female gang leader My Soi, which organized rape and robbery, including child rape, in Hanoi in 2011; the case of the rebellious son Nguyen Kha Dat who murdered his mother, stole her property, and hid her body in a water jar in Kien Giang province in 2015; and the case committed by Le Tuan Anh (born in 1995, residing in Quang Chau commune, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province) with the acts of "rape" and "murder" in 2012. The case of Nguyen Cong Bao (15 years old) committing against artist Do Linh in Ho Chi Minh City was reported on three prominent online newspapers: Dan Tri, VnExpress, and Tuoi Tre. In terms of content, the thesis deeply analyzed and surveyed information regarding the cause of the crime; the method of committing the crime; the verdict; information related to the perpetrator after sentencing; the impact of the incident on society; and other information as well as the form of presentation: photos, headlines, and lead paragraphs. Based on the survey and analysis, the thesis points out the advantages and limitations of that information.
Chapter 3 of the thesis presents several solutions and recommendations to improve the quality of information about juvenile delinquency in Vietnamese online newspapers. The proposed solutions are specifically addressed to media management agencies in general and online newspapers in particular, emphasizing the need for better reporting guidelines and stricter penalties to limit online newspapers from publishing unverified or inhumane information about juvenile offenders.
