This article presents the characteristics and types of adjective-to-noun conversion in English and Vietnamese. Through a survey of 130 statements in 10 speeches by former President Donald Trump, we found that:
When using the conversion of adjectives into nouns, the user aims to affirm the existence of a certain characteristic, making that characteristic more visible, more convincing, and creating a formal tone for the written sentence.
When English nouns are translated into Vietnamese in statements, there is no change in word class, but in Vietnamese nouns, there is a change in word class from adjective to noun. The root word is an adjective combined with an additional change in word class such as "su, niem, dieu, moi, cai, long, viec, nen".
