- The thesis is divided into 3 chapters:

- In chapter 1: The thesis outlines the domestic and international social situation in the late 19th century; the tradition of Vietnamese maritime trade in history and the situation of maritime trade from the time of King Gia Long to the time of King Thieu Tri.

- In chapter 2: This is the main chapter of the thesis. In this chapter, the thesis focuses on clarifying the changes in maritime trade policy of King Tu Duc in 2 periods: The period of restricting and strictly prohibiting maritime trade (1848 - 1874) and the period of gradually loosening and then removing the ban on maritime trade (1874 - 1883). The change in policy has led to many positive changes in maritime trade and exchange activities between Vietnam and other countries.

- In chapter 3: Based on the presentation and discussion of the views of previous researchers on Vietnam's maritime trade under the reign of King Tu Duc, the thesis presents comments on the situation of maritime trade under the reign of King Tu Duc, and compares maritime trade activities during this period with the previous period.

This thesis is divided into three chapters:

- In the first chapter: Thesis generalize the social situation in the country and international late nineteenth century; traditional sea of ​​trade of Vietnamese in the history and situation sea of ​​trade of Vietnam from Gia Long King to Thieu Tri King.

- In chapter two: This is the main chapters of the thesis.
